Software is essentially any kind of computer programme on your computer that carries out a particular task, procedure or documentation. There is a wide range of different software available allowing the user to carry out tasks that once were only available to professionals and experienced users. Software allowing us the edit both video and sound allow us to create our own media products, which are often as slick and well made as professional productions. Design software can also help us to create images that can be doctored and changed, meaning we can create photographic but fictional images.

Software in some forms have also revolutionised the way we carry out tasks that have been carried out for hundreds of years. Writing, for example, is no longer restricted to the pen (or the typewriter) – people can now type with word processing software, which not only allows us the ability to correct mistakes, but also anticipate them with programmes such as spelling and grammar checking facilities. We also listen to music differently, instead of relying on the radio or CDs (or even live shows, tapes and records) we can hear our favourite tunes through media playing software that can be downloaded directly from the internet.
